Vietnamese education program calls for book donations

The website, which was established to promote reading and education in Vietnam, is appealing for book donations to assist people in the nation’s underdeveloped areas.

The program called “One Book” was launched by the website on World Book Day on April 23.

Businesses and individuals have so far donated or committed to over 60,000 books and a significant amount of money for the project.

These include fashion designer Si Hoang who gave VND100 million (US$6,200), the Saigon Businessmen’s Club with 20,000 books and Thuan Kieu Dental Clinic with 10,000 books.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training will call on over 1.2 million students at local primary and high schools to take part in the project by donating at least one book.

Millions of members of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union in 64 provinces and cities are expected to support the project via the union’s central office in Hanoi. is a social education project initiated by over 50 prestigious educators and officials from agencies and newspapers nationwide, including the HCMC-based PACE Institute for Management, the HCMC Department of Education and Training, Thanh Nien and Tuoi Tre newspapers.
